My Saturday Afternoon
I had a really busy week, since the kids are back in school, everything is in full swing. Usually it takes time for me to get used to the new routine. I slept in and had a slow start to the day (which is very rare!). By the time I fed kids lunch, I was back to myself, I had an itch to sew.
There was a quilt top I put together a few weeks ago (remember the Liberty of London fabrics?) and I was kept going back and forth should I hand quilt(I am in my comfort zone), or ignore the fear of machine quilting and just try it (which would put me way out of my comfort zone).
Guess what?! I decided to try machine quilting! I have done machine quilting before, but I used straight lines on a much smaller quilt. This time I wanted try "loops". Ok, it doesn't sound difficult to do, but when I think "what if I mess up?" I just didn't have the guts to do it.
For some reason, I felt like I could do it this afternoon. What happend to "What if I mess up?" well, that attitude became... "Nah, it's ok, I have to start somewhere and practice, I will just do my best."
So, I did it! It took me 7 hours(including the time to cook and feed my family a dinner) and like I predicted, it is nowhere near perfect. The loops and stitches are not equal in some areas... but I feel ok! I did it! I hope this is the start of many more machine quilted quilts. I have several quilt tops that are waiting to be quilted, I hope get a chance to practice more and get good at it someday.
I will share the picture of the finished quilt when I am done with the binding. Have a happy Sunday everyone!
It looks so beautiful!! I love the way you have done a loopy design for the quilting, very pretty. Might have to try that one myself. Your fabrics are so beautiful as well. It's going to be one amazingly beautiful quilt. Well done for being so brave!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love all the detail you were able to create with machine-quilting!
I just don't have the patience for quilting...it's just never appealed to me...
But that is just fantastic!

Wow! I'm impressed. I think it looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks lovely! I think you did a fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteHello....I am new to your blog and to quilting. I have just finished making my first T-shirt quilt. I want to make a cotton fabric quilt next and was wondering about having it machine quilted or doing it my self! Well, I think you did a fine job! It looks lovely...:) There is something I like about the old fashion method of hand quilting, Yet...I'm sure it would take me forever. thanks for sharing...Lisa
ReplyDeleteCongrats on giving it your first shot!
ReplyDeleteSachiko, this is a beautiful piece of art work that you can snuggle with and keep it for many, many years to come! Only you and maybe a quilt critic will notice that the circles are not matching. I am more than 100% sure that your kids, husband, family, and friends would be so proud of you! (They might even ask you to make them one of their own!) I know I would! =]

It looks great! I don't have the patience to hand quilt. I love machine quilting though. My MIL has a quilting machine and it makes things so much easier!
ReplyDeletedThose fabrics you used are gorgeous. And the stitching looks great! I look forward to seeing the whole quilt!
ReplyDeleteWow, it's gotgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I can't tell it's not perfect! I didn't even have the guts to do that much on my first quilt - I sent it away to be automatically machine quilted. lol So congratulations!
ReplyDeleteOh how absolutely lovely your quilt is! I've never made one and marvel at the colors and combination's you've chosen. I love fabric buying it without one project in mind, lol. How do you make these color choices ? It must be that you are blessed and have a gift of art.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
Best,
Elise
It looks beautiful! Can't wait to see the finished project!
ReplyDeleteWow, it looks gorgeous! Well done! :) x
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I recently just decided to "go for it" and try free-motion quilting myself and I'm surprised at how easy it is! I love your loops!
ReplyDeleteNice loop design!
ReplyDeleteLooks pretty good for your first go at loops! I think that's the way to go, just jumping right in and doing it without thinking of failure.
ReplyDeleteI love the loops. I have a quilt top that I just barely finished on Friday. I need to get the backing done, and then it's time to quilt! I've never machine quilted either...but I'm going to! I was thinking of doing a meandering type stitch, but I may just do the loops too. Soo cute!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic! I am so impressed that this is your first attempt at machine quilting! I hope this is the first of MANY quilts you will be machine quilting!! :o)
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous! I'm terrified to try machine quilting (other than semi-straight lines) I think I may just have to try it too!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great!
ReplyDeleteYou go girl. You just did it! I took a free motion class a year ago and i was surprised to see that it's not as easy at it may look. You had the right attitude...you have to start somewhere. Love that. I need to get back on the sewing machine and practice the free motion again.
ReplyDeletedespite your claim of the uneven loops & stitch ( which are hard to detect by the way), your quilt is sooooo pretty! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it looks amazing!! i love quilts. they just seem so full of love to me.
