Four Shirts Four Ways ~Navy~

When I was brain storming some t-shirt refashion designs for the "Four Shirts Four Ways", I wanted to work with the navy shirt first, but I couldn't quite finalize the design.

I am so happy that I was able to make the shirt almost exactly the way I pictured it in my mind. It might look a little more complicated than my other ruffle shirt, but don't be afraid! It is quit simple, it is just a little time consuming when sewing the beads on, but the result is totally worth it!

Here is what I did:

{You will need}

2 of the same t-shirt
matching thread
two different kind of beads

{How to}

1. Take one of the t-shirt, lay it flat on the cutting board, make sure that there are no whrinkles. Cut 4 - 2 1/4" wide strips.

2. Cut one side of the 2 1/4" loops to open the loop and make it in to strips. Piece two strips from the bottom to make a slightly larger loop, and take the other two pieces put together to make a slightly smaller loop.

3. Using large stitches, sew 1/4" from the one side and go all around the loop. Pull one thread to gather the fabric to make ruffles.

4, Pin the larger ruffled loop to the bottom (little above the seamline of the bottom) and sew. Pin the smaller ruffled loop above the first ruffle (so that the second ruffle will overlap a little with the first one) and sew.

5. Cut 2 - 1" wide loop from the t-shirt. Cut oneside open to make strips.

6. Sew in the middle of the strips in the same manner as step 3 to make ruffles.

7. Place the ruffles as you desire and pin them. It will be helpful to play around with it for a little bit to see what you like. I did mine on the left side of the neck and the right side of the bottom.

8. I wanted to make this ruffle shirt different than my other ruffle shirt, so I sewed some beads to give it a little sparkle.

9. Finished!

If you are not keen on the bead work, I think it is perfectly fine to stop at step 7. It is all up to you! Play with the ruffle strips, you might end up with something totally unique that fits your style. :)

I couldn't help but try on my new shirt... Our anniversary is comming up, this shirt might be the "one" for our date.

  2. Hi Sachiko,

    I love the beads on the t-shirt.

    I have a small request. I was thinking about using yo-yo's for my t-shirt refashion, but after thinking about it, I am not sure how I would sew yo-yos onto the t-shirt. Do you think you could give me some tips?

    Thanks,
    Justine

  21. Really looks fantastic on you! The ruffles almost remind me of fiddlehead ferns....which has the wheels going in my head now...I think you just inspired me!

  22. Thank You for that. You bring such joy into so many homes by sharing your creations! You may be the one who gets me back into sewing. Paper has taken over for some years now, fabric may come back. Cutting knit fabric is a challenge. I made a quilt one time with T-shirts. It was a challenge! Thank heavens for quilting rulers, mats and cutting wheels!

  29. Thank you thank you thank you!!! You have just solved my dilemma of a small stain on one of my favorite tanks. Due to the position, I wanted to do a vertical ruffle but wasn't sure how it would look. I like what you have done here!!!

  31. Hi Justine,

    Thank you for visiting my blog! About your question... you could either sew all around the yo-yo and the bottom fabric together with slip stitch (so, you won't see the stitches) or, you could just sew in a couple of places on top of the yo-yo with a sewing machine. I have done this with my little girl's tunic.

    I hope I answered your question. Have a nice week :)

  39. I dig this navy running ruffles t-shirt you have great creative skill.I think it's so cool that we can express ourselves in this manner & have the internet to share it with millions of other people who may have not ever even tried this sort of project, but now see that you don't have to start from square one to create your own wardrobe.I have been doing this same type of thing for a while now &I love wearing my own creations.I'm a teacher assistant/School Bus Driver & the kids all Love them too.I use various things like Wired Ribbon(gathered)Lace,Material,sometimes ripped in lengths or cut to size,sometimes I even buy some type of embellishments.I just finished some for the new School year.It's funny cause one is similar to yours except it's done with a purple striped wire ribbon,gathered down the middle and it has a circle done with the ribbon twisted over itself 3-times.Not my usual color but i really like it.Thanks for CREATING.......

  44. Thank you so much for this! I serve at my church as a greeter, and they provide unisex, shapeless T-shirts to everyone that serves, so that visitors can easily identify people they can go to and ask questions. I love serving, but I am short and "round" and loathe wearing shapeless T-shirts. They are so unflattering on me, and I am a Girly Girl who likes wearing cute outfits with great accessories whenever I go out in public. It's hard to "dress up" and accessorize a shapeless, unisex T-shirt! I altered the neckline and sleeves of my T-shirt, and added the ruffles based on your design. I didn't have time to add the embellishments, but may do that later. I wore it to church last week to rave reviews! The other ladies are asking me to "fix" their shirts, too! So glad I stumbled across your Blog via Pinterest!

  45. Hi Sachio,
    I love all of your creations, seeing your ruffles, where you place them, is really worth taking the time to get right, with ruffles they seem to have to be the correct width, otherwise they look alll wrong and stand out for the wrong reasons meaning they can look odd, but yours have the sparkle we’re all trying to get, you are so creative and inspiring so clever, thanks for sharing
