Hazel & Ruby ~ Crafternoon Kit Update!

Oh, how excited I am to finally be able to write this post! I was given a chance to collaborate with Hazel & Ruby to create my Tea Towel Apron as a kit for Crafternoon.

What is Crafternoon you might ask? Here is the promo video they have created:

Isn't thus such a great concept? I see something pretty on Pinterest and pin them with the intention of making them someday, but how often do I really do so? Crafternoon kits are made for someone like you and I... busy people who still love crafting and being creative.

It has been a long time since the day we started working on this project but I am happy to say that my kit; along with other fabulous craft kits are available at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, on their web site and other craft stores near you! They are projects that are simple enough to make in an afternoon. You don't have to worry about finding materials, matching the colors and patterns and so on. Everything you need to make the project is in the package (except the basic tools), all you need to do it is to have a blast!

Oh, then get this... I created a video for my kit. When you use the special QR code, you will be able to watch the tutorial. Are you up to sew along with me?

Tada! This can be yours (or who ever you want to make it for) in an afternoon!

Since this is a blog hop, let me introduce you to Virginia of Fynes Designs. She shares many home decor, recipes, party ideas and tutorials for everyday beautiful living. She created a fun embroidery hoop art for Crafternoon, make sure to hop over to see her! :)

I asked special blogger friends to review my Tea Towel Apron beginning this month, also I am hosting a giveaway soon. Lots of exciting things are happening, so stay tuned! :)

Psst... Something Exciting is Happening!

I have been keeping a secret for a while from you wonderful readers... but today I can tell you a bit about it.

I was approached by a company called Hazel & Ruby and given a chance to collaborate with them to create a craft kit!! I have been working to create the actual item, taking pictures, writing instructions and shooting a video! That's right, I said "video"! Being in front of a camera is not my forte, but I did it with my ever so supportive husband; AKA Mr.TRH.

Along with other blogger's craft kits (there are going be lots of fun kits!), my kit will be in a store near you soon. Eeek!

It would be a lie if I said I am not nervous, especially when I start thinking about whether my kit will sell or how people are going to receive it. But, looking back over the last several years of my life... how many times I passed up, or said "no" to opportunities, just because I was scared and because I didn't believe I could do it. This time, I decided to grab the bull by the horns and do my best. The rest... well, life is an adventure, right? I will wait and see what happens with an ever so delighted and thankful heart.

I will let you know when the product is released, so stay tuned! :)

Sew Easy! 15 Minute Kitchen Towel Apron

I found this really attractive kitchen towel when I was strolling about at Crate & Barrel.

I have been needing to make a new apron for my kids for a while, the light bulb moment came to me right away. Today I will show you how easily and quickly you can make an apron with a kitchen towel.

{You will need}

1 Kitchen towel (mine was 21 1/2" x 30")
3/4" wide woven tape --- 3 yards (I am pretty sure mine is 100% cotton)
Matching thread

{How to}

1. Measure the top corner of the kitchen towel; 5" on the top edge, 9" on the side and draw a diagonal line.

2. Fold the towel in half with right sides together and make sure that the edges and corners are perfectly matched. Cut on the line.

3. Fold the diagonal lines twice(first 1/4" then 1") press with iron and sew with 1/8" seam.

4. Thread the woven tape from one side of the bottom to the top and then through the top on the other side and out the bottom. Then, treat the ends of the woven tape by folding and sewing.

That is it! Now it is ready to put to use. As you can see on my mannequin, a grown up can wear it...

as well as my 9 year old daughter. She was so eager to help in the kitchen that night wearing her new apron. :)

*Note: If the kitchen towel you are going to use is smaller than this one, you might want to change the measurement of the top corner. For example; 4" on the top edge 7 1/2" on the side.

You are My Cup of Tea Apron Tutorial at UCreate

I am sharing this "You are My Cup of Tea apron" tutorial over at Ucreate. It is a challenge to find a pretty, unique, and functional gift for under $5, but I thought this apron could be just that. I used a kitchen towel I found at Target when it was on sale for around $3. If you are a sewer, I assume you already have some fabric scraps, heat & bond and some trims & pom-poms laying around... that is pretty much all you need to make this apron. Head over to see complete tutorial at Ucreate today!

One Fine Day

Today was a bit of a slow day for me. My oldest had a really bad cough so he stayed home from school. I took him to the doctor in the morning, I only had to go to school once to pick up my middle son after the doctor. After that we picked up the medicine and came home and stayed home the rest of the day.

After they finished their homework, they played quietly (well, for me it was quieter than nomal eventhough I heard them jump from their bed to the floor several times.)

You know what? That was nice! I actually had some time DURING THE DAY to sew. Usually I am always on the go; it is hard to find the time to sew during the day. I finished making my mom's secnd apron and another handbag!

After dinner we watched a movie as a family and had a blast. We talked, laughed and enjoyed each others company.

There was no big event or anything.

Eventhough my oldest was sick, it was just a very nice and calm pleasent day.

I loved it.

Tutorial--Place Mat Cafe Apron---

One day I was at Target, one of my favorite stores and found this place mat at the clearance section. Ooh! I love the color. I see potential!

So I decided to take it home.

First I picked out three different fat quarters from my stash. All strips include a 1/4" seam allowance and are cut 1/2" wider than the place mat. The red fabric at the bottom was cut 2" wide, the flower print fabric was cut 6.5", and the teal fabric was cut 1" wide. I decided to include red trim which I cut 1/2" longer than length of the place mat.

Sew the red print strip and the flower print strip together. Fold the seam towards the darker color fabric and press with an iron. I got creative and used a zigzag stitch between those two fabrics.

Lay the trim and the teal fabric (right side down) on top of the flower print fabric at the edge. Pin them in place and sew them together.

Remove the pins and fold the teal fabric twice (like using bias tape) and pin it to the other side and sew.
Finish the side and bottom edges with your favorite method. (Zig zag, serger, etc...) Fold the edges 1/4" and sew onto the placemat.

On the pocket, draw a line to divide the pocket. You can be creative and do whatever you want. My side pockets are each 6" wide. Sew on the line.

To make the apron strings, cut two 2" wide strips from borth the red and flower print fabric. Piece a flower print strip and red strip together. Now you should have two long strips. Fold both edges together and iron. Then fold in half length wise and sew.

Attach one string to each side of the apron and sew.

I sometime enjoy putting things together and going with the flow. The great thing about this apron is that you can do pretty much anything you want. Be creative and be an artist, you will end up with a one of a kind apron that you will love!

I'm still learning how to write tutorial, so if you don't understand something just drop me a line and I'll try to help you out. Have a great weekend!
