Belated TRH 3rd Anniversary Giveaway!

I had a month long TRH Anniversary giveaway in September, and I had one more giveaway planned, then my health issue got in the way. So, this is kind of random, but here is the last item for my 3rd Anniversary giveaway...

Japanese bento box and a carrying pouch. I wanted to do something that would reflect my blog and things that I’ve posted about. Then I remember many of you wanted to know where you can purchase a bento box like mine... But a bento box is a little boring. So, I decided to make a carrying pouch to go with it. Do you like the fabric? Seriously, it took me such a long time to decide on which fabric combination to go with.

I have the exact same bento box and I love it. I love how the divider can come off and that I can use it in different ways.

I posted about my Japanese style bento here and here, but you can certainly put in anything you want. How about some crackers, grapes, and some cute sandwiches? The possibilities are endless and I think you will have fun!

Here is how to enter:

1. Usual comment is fine, but can you tell me what you would put in to the bento box? I think that will be fun for everyone to read and get some ideas. :) (1st entry)

2. Become a follower of Tea Rose Home. (2nd entry)

3. Facebook, Tweet, or blog about the giveaway. (3rd entry)

That's it! I will run the giveaway until midnight of the 9th and post the winner on the 10th. Good luck!

Link Love No. 73!

Let me just tell you how grateful I am for all the comments and personal emails regarding to "Untold Story of My Medical History". I wish I could comment back to each one of you, but it is bit difficult to do... I just want you to know that I read each one of them and really appreciate that you take time to write to me.

Many of you mentioned that I am being brave for sharing my personal story, and thanked me... no, I think I am the one who needs to say thank you. Thank you for reading my story! I consider my blog a sewing/craft blog with a little bit of my life's happenings mixed in. Although, being ill and getting procedures done is such a big part of my life, I can't just ignore it. In the past, there were times that I mentioned I won't be posting because of a procedure and such, but I never really told you what I have exactly.

Then one day I thought, "why not?" You guys already support me with my sewing experiments and adventures; I knew most of you wouldn't mind reading and getting to know more about my "shady side" too.
Also, sharing my story is my way of cheering you on too. What do I mean by that?

Well, we ALL have something we are dealing with...illness, relationships, financial, housing, kids, etc., etc... A never ending list of thing. Mine just happens to be health issues, but the bottom line is the same; handling the obstacles, enduring, and finding happiness. It would be my pleasure if you would remember your little blogger friend and her story when you are going through a tough time and say "I am gonna keep trying".

I will write Part 4 soon, there are still lots to tell. Oh, also I am doing a "belated TRH 3rd anniversary giveaway" on Monday make sure to come back to see what it is!

Well, that was a long intro, but I do have FIVE link loves for this week. Are you ready?

Boy, time flies! Halloween is over and before we know it Thanksgiving will pass us by and it will be Christmas! I have been keeping my eyes open for good gift ideas, and these adorable key chains by Scraponique caught my eyes. Aren't they so fun? I think it will make awesome stocking stuffers (and if you couldn't finished them by Christmas, there is always Valentine's day! :) )

I have seen many up cycled projects, but this one is a gem! Me Sew Crazy created this handsome sweater, and I just adore how it turned out. Great job!

Rubies and Pearls shared this cozy necklace with us. I love all the details she put in to this one of a kind necklace.

One of the jobs I dreamed of doing is widow display designer. When I walk into Anthropology my eyes wonder to look at the awesome displays inside the store. This twine ball reminds me of those types of cool displays where you wonder how it's made. Musings of a glamourpuss shared a step by step tutorial on her blog, so head over to see how she did it.

As I mentioned about Christmas in the beginning, I am always looking out for beautiful and unique Christmas decorations. Krista Sew Inspired shared this step by step tutorial on her blog on how to make this ornament. I am definitely looking out for vintage music sheets from now on!

Thank you all for your great projects, see you on Monday!

Untold Story of My Medical History Part 3

If you haven't read "untold story of my medical history" part 1 and part 2, you can read it here and here. If you are not interested, please come back to my sewing/crafty posts. :)

Ok, where was I... That's right, the part that Dr.D's partner, Dr.T became my doctor.

So, like I said his first impression wasn't bad, he was talkative, and friendly.
My condition wasn't improving at all. I had excruciating pain in my leg and my body kept rejecting the blood transfusion I was receiving. Because of the pain (yeah, did I mention that I am allergic to most of the pain meds?) I hardly ate the last three months, and my weight dropped to 89 lbs.

In the beginning of getting to know Dr.T, he told us that he is not familiar with my disorder. He said, he read the name of the syndrome in a text book when he was a medical student once, but never met a patient before... (I was thinking to myself, “oh, no”).

*Side note* At the time, I thought I had a condition called "Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome" which the doctors in Japan diagnosed me with. The doctors told my parents that I will not live past my teenage years. After the diagnosis, my mother tracked down two people in Japan who had the same syndrome as me. I think her intention was to find out if what the doctors told her was true and they were both deceased.

After several visit, Dr.T told us that he is been doing his own research, but at this point he thinks I should have the rest of my right leg amputated. Practically growing up in the hospital, I have met several people who lost their leg from the pelvis and I have seen how hard it is to learn to walk. I thought not having below the knee is bad enough, but to lose the rest of my right leg is whole new different challenge. I have to relearn everything anew. I thought, if that was the only option, I guess I have to do so, but I really didn't want to. Besides, if he is not familiar with the syndrome, how can he know amputation is the best option?

I was also thinking about my sweet husband, who never once complained in the last three months and kept taking care of me. At the time he was going to school part time, working full time and still managed to come home on his lunch break to take care of me. I felt really bad for him, if I lost the rest of my leg, he might have a hard time getting used to my new form.

At that time our chance of having our own child was very slim too. I was really sad and depressed, if I wasn't sleeping, I was crying. I don't think I cried that much ever before, I probably could have collected my tears in several mason jars.

Between my crying in the hospital bed I was remembering something that happened after our engagement.

My mom liked Mr.TRH and respected him, but she was also afraid that one day I will get very ill like I often did growing up and Mr.TRH will get fed up with the stress, chaos, and financial mess. It was indeed very hard for my father; he was often very cold and distant. Before Mr.TRH (well, way before he became Mr.TRH) asked me to marry him, I really tried my best to explain my syndrome to him and how bad it can be, basically I tried to scare him off.

My mother even said to him that "It was hard to raise her as a parent, what makes you think you can handle everything and take care of her? You might get sick of everything and divorce her someday".

He politely but firmly said, "I won't, I will take care of her and love her. Don't worry"

I didn't know where his confidence was coming from but one of his good/bad quality is that he can be strong headed and stubborn. He didn't budge.

I was remembering all that and thought I really didn't want him to feel like he is stuck in this marriage. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. I told him that he can divorce me if it is too much for him and I will not have bitter feelings toward him... When I think of it now, I was so ill and needed the care, it's not like I could walk out of the room and say good-by, or that Mr. TRH would throw me in a ditch somewhere, but when I told him the "D" word, I was dead serious. I felt like I was going to ruin his life.

He was sitting by the side of my bed and quietly listening to me. Then when I was done talking he leaned over and started to stroke my hair. He was looking at me with his most tender eyes... then he said,

"I didn't marry you to just have children. I married to you because I love you and for who you are. If we can have a child that's great, but if we can't I am ok with it. Besides we are married for eternity, not until things get hard or death do us apart. I just want you to get better. I am not going to divorce you sweetheart, don't say stuff like that anymore."

In our religion, we believe that a marriage and families can be together forever. I do believe that strongly, but at the time I was in such a dark place in my life and couldn't think that way. Although, Mr. TRH's unconditional love and support pulled me out from that place and I realized how blessed I am to have such a loving person beside me in such a difficult time... I was crying again, but for different reasons.

I desperately wanted to get better for him, myself and for our future. At the time we had no idea what would happen next. Mr.TRH came to see me at least once or twice every day and we had our mini dates watching movies and such. He always had ways to make me laugh with his jokes and stories.

Later on I found out from my mother-in-law that he was actually really devastated at the time. He never showed me that side of him, he was always cheerful and optimistic around me... but he was afraid that he might lose me if things stay the same for much longer (I was still rejecting the blood I was receiving and my hematocrit level was dangerously low. No one knew what to do).

It was hard to watch her son suffer and be in anguish, my mother-in-law really wanted to help us. We didn't know this, but around that time, she started extensively researching to find a specialist who can help me...

To be continued...

This post got really long, so I will tell you more in part 4. I hope you all have great weekend! :)

Link Party No. 73!

I posted the 3 lucky winners for the 25 Holiday cards by Shutterfly here, so make sure to find out if you won.

If you didn't win this time don't be discouraged...
I don't know if you remember this or not, but I did Tea Rose Home 3rd Anniversary Giveaway in September. I mentioned that I will have FOUR giveaway posts. Then, my medical condition got worse and I couldn't do the last giveaway. Because there was something I wanted to make for this last giveaway, and it was a bit hard for me...BUT I am the type of girl who keeps my word (well, at least I really try to).

I have been up and about lately, and did some sewing and it is done! It's not anything big, but I thought the item(s) will represent my blog in some ways...hint hint...keep guessing what it could be...hehehe
I will have the giveaway sometime in the next week, so make sure to come back to see what it is.

Meanwhile, please start linking your fabulous projects to share with all!

1. Please post something YOU made. It doesn't matter if it is crochet, quilt, clothing, anything would be fine. I want to see it! If you use someone's idea or patterns please give them the rightful credit.

2. Link to your specific post, that way it is easier for everybody to find and read it.

3. Please grab the "Tea Rose Home" grab button, and link back from your post. If you can mention the party in your post or place the button on your side bar, that would be great! I want more people to have a chance to come and show off their creation.

Tutorial / T-shirt Pillow (just because I found an old t-shirt)

I have been going through my house on and off for the last several months. To get rid of things I usually have a system... There are three piles, such as "Donate", "Sell", "Throw away". Any other place in the house is not hard to do this except in Mr. TRH and my closet.

I have a weakness for fabrics, and there is no exception when I am trying to get rid of some clothes. Even though an item hasn't been worn for such a long time, I start to think "uh, I can use this to make this" or "ah, I bet if I do this and this I can still wear it".

So, this is one of those projects that I just had to try and see. :)

I found this old t-shirt on Mr.TRH’s side of closet. It was in good condition, but he hadn’t worn it AT ALL for several years.

1. First cut it apart.

2. Cut 2 -- 15" X 22" rectangles for the pillow, and many 1" wide strips. If the t-shirt you have is smaller, you can cut smaller rectangles to make a smaller pillow.

3. On one of the rectangles, you can start "drawing". When you stretch the strips, they will curl up; I think this gives an interesting effect to the pillow. I didn't have any plans whatsoever, but I just eye balled the middle, and pinned the first strip and started to sew.

Keep drawing with strips...

4. After I did lots of "drawing" with strips, I made some ruffle strips to fill in some spaces. To make ruffles, sew in the middle of the strips with large stitches and pull one of the threads. Gather the fabric to make ruffles.

5. Put the front and back fabrics right sides together. Pin them and sew all around it with 1/4" seam. Make sure to leave 3" - 4" opening for turning.

7. Snip the corners for a neat finish.

8. Turn, press the edges with an iron. Stuff, slip stitch closed...and ta-da!

When the kids came home from school, Rachel noticed the pillow right away; the boys couldn’t care less about such minor details in life. I thought it was so funny to see the difference. Although, the pillow is loved by everyone, it is so soft and cuddly and perfect for a pillow fight. :)

Link Love No.72!

Hello, hello friends, how has your week been? I am still on the path of recovery, but enjoy doing more for my family and of course some sewing now. Where I live, the scenery has changed so much in the past few weeks and I love looking at the beautiful fall colors outside.

There were many fall and Halloween projects and recipes on this week's link party. I enjoyed them a lot, thank you for your participation!

Here are the 5 loves for this week.

I love how pretty and easy it is to make this wreath! Polka Dot Bungalow shared a step by step tutorial on her blog. Great job!

I couldn't resist the cuteness...meet baby princess Leia from Lauren Inspired. Simply irresistible, hands down cute!

First of all, I must say I love unique titles. See Kate Sew shared her "Sweatshirt Liposuction" project with us. At first I thought "What?", then, the picture on her blog post explains it all... funny. The result of this operation is big but "smaller in size" success too!

Our Home's Cool shared this fun scrappy lampshade with us. I love the look of this lampshade, but fell in love with the effect on the sealing when the light is on. Head over to her blog to see what I am talking about.

I have been going through our house to organize for a few months now (on and off). It was pretty easy except for Mr.TRH and my closet. I kept finding clothes that I think I can make it into something and it is just so hard to put them in the "throw away" or "donate" bag. Anyways...Orlosubito did such a wonderful job turning a man's shirt into a pretty tunic. I love the simplicity of it. Thank you for sharing!

See you at the next post everyone!
