Tutorial ~ Square Scrunchie with Baby Lock Victory

You might have made a scrunchie before, but have you ever made SQUARE scrunchies? I love square scrunchies, because it gives a different look when you tie your hair. It almost gives an illusion of tying a scarf or bandana rather than a fabric with elastic. This is also a great sewing project that is quick, easy and inexpensive, if you were looking for handmade gift ideas for Christmas. There are many tutorials out there, but I thought I would share a tutorial using my Baby Lock Victory serger.

Let's dive right in!

* You will need
Fabric --- to cut 2 pieces of 10"x 10" squares
Elastic -- cut 8"
a template of 4" diameter circle(or something close. I just used a cereal box and drew a circle)
Matching thread
Other sewing necessities

1. Fold the fabric right side together. Cut 2 pieces of fabrics to 10"x10", fold the corner to corner to create a triangle and fold it again. lightly press the middle to create the crease to mark the center.

2. Put the 4" diameter circle in the middle and draw a line all the way around.

3. Sew these two fabrics together (still right sides together by sewing on the line all the way around.

4. Cut out circles from inside of the circle, leaving a 1/4" seam. Snip around the inside of the circle, be careful not to cut the seam, to have a nice seam when you turn it inside out.

5. Turn the fabric inside out. Now, the right side of the fabrics are shown on the outside. press.

6. Tie the ends of the 8" elastic to create a circle. Put the elastic in the middle of the sewed fabric.

7. Secure the corners, and other seams with pins.

8. I decided to do the rolled hem stitch with my Baby Lock serger!
Here is the setting I used:

9. Hide the thread ending by putting it through the stitches.

10. It is ready to enjoy!

Look at the nice and neat seams.

Because I didn't have the right colored threads for other fabrics, I made them with a different method, but using the serger allows you to skip some steps. It will be fun to make this scrunchie with cotton, but I used various satin this time. I think the color and the shine is perfect for the upcoming holiday seasons. They will also make a great gift, if you are looking for something to make for family, friends and coworkers for their birthdays and Christmas.

I love how it looks! I bet it will be fun to use two different fabrics to make this too.
Happy sewing everyone!
